Stephen Shankle’s goal throughout almost 40 years as a hairdresser has always been that every client leaves his hair chair not just looking better, but feeling better — about a bad boss or a nightmare neighbor, about a philandering spouse or an adult child who won’t move out. While cutting and styling, highlighting and blow-drying, Stephen listens to it all and somehow comes up with just the right response, whether it’s a hug that says “I’m sorry” or a quip that says “Get over yourself.”
Much like his clients who leave feeling better because of his sensitivity (and his sense of humor), so will anyone who sends or receives a HeHimSheHers greeting card.
“I’ve had so many people in my chair talk about problems expressing their feelings either as LGBTQ people themselves or to the LGBTQ people they care about,” Stephen says. He hopes HeHimSheHers cards help them do that.
As a gay youth growing up in conservative Middle Tennessee, he knew first-hand the feeling of not fitting in and the fear of letting his family down. He is forever grateful that his family, including his parents and five older sisters, accepted him completely. “I always say what I mean, and I often use my humor to soften the blow,” he says.
